Xiaokun Shu receives tenure

Xiaokun Shu, PhD, has received tenure as a faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Gartner to co-direct new UCSF-based Center for Cellular Construction

UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member Zev Gartner, PhD, will be co-director of a new multi-institution UCSF-administered Center for Cellular Construction, which has been awarded a five-year $24 million grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

John Gross advances to full professor

John Gross, PhD, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, has been promoted to full professor.

Researchers in the Gross Lab combine a wide variety of molecular biology and quantitative biochemistry techniques with biophysics and structural biology experiments, such as NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, in order to understand how the composition, structure, and dynamics of multi-protein complexes affect their cellular function.

Youmans elected AACP Council of Deans Secretary

Sharon Youmans, PharmD, MPH, and UCSF School of Pharmacy vice dean, is the newly elected Council of Deans Secretary, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). 

The council includes a select number of the nation’s leaders in academic pharmacy. Council activities focus on educational policies, professional program administration within academic institutions, and the ties between academic pharmacy and the community.

Matt Jacobson named chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Renowned researcher and educator Matthew Jacobson, PhD, has been named the new chair of the UCSF School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. His appointment by Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, will be effective January 15, 2016.

Jacobson will become the department’s 10th chair since its formation in 1958. He succeeds James Wells, PhD, who is stepping down from the post after leading the department since 2008.

Sali named associate dean of research

Andrej Sali, PhD, has been appointed associate dean of research of the UCSF School of Pharmacy, effective July 1, 2015. The appointment is in addition to Sali’s full professorship in the School’s Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences. As he continues with his own research, Sali will advise Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, and School leaders on pertinent research issues and opportunities and will represent the School in critical campus research decisions.

Zev Gartner receives tenure

Zev Gartner, PhD, has received tenure and advanced to the position of associate professor. Researchers in the Gartner Lab study mammalian cell-cell interactions, with an emphasis on how tissue structure serves to organize cell-cell interactions in vivo. They work entirely on cell-cell interactions relevant to human biology, using the human breast as a model tissue.

Danica Galonic Fujimori receives tenure

Danica Galonic Fujimori, PhD, has received tenure and advanced to the position of associate professor. She holds a joint appointment with the Departments of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology. Fujimori’s research is centered on the enzymology and cellular roles of post-translational methylation.

Reception welcomes four faculty to department

Four faculty members have recently joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and were welcomed at a reception at Mission Bay on February 25. The guests of honor were Steven Altschuler, PhD; Lani Wu, PhD; Lei Wang, PhD; and Brian Shoichet, PhD. Shoichet has returned to UCSF after a year at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, University of Toronto.
