Seiple named a 2018 Beckman Young Investigator

Ian Seiple, PhD, was named a Beckman Young Investigator on May 29. The award “provides research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of their academic careers in the chemical and life sciences, particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science.”

Seiple is a faculty member at the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute, and holds a joint appointment in the School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Seiple earned his PhD in 2011 at Scripps Research Institute under Phil Baran, PhD, and recently completed his postdoctoral research under Andrew Myers, PhD, at Harvard University. He specializes in the synthesis of complex molecules from simple chemical building blocks. His work provides a foundation for the development and study of novel antibiotics that cannot be synthesized using traditional chemistry methods—a necessary advancement in the face of increasing pathogen resistance to available antibiotics.
