Fujimori unveils enzymatic process in bacteria that leads to antibiotic resistance

Research results published from the UCSF research laboratory of Danica Galonić Fujimori, PhD, have revealed a radical approach employed by bacteria to alter their ribosomes and thereby evade antibiotics. These findings could ultimately lead to the development of ways to block this enzymatic transformation. Fujimori, who is a joint faculty member in the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, reported on results at the March 21–25, 2010, meeting of the American Chemical Society held in San Francisco, California. A highlight of her presentation appeared in Chemical and Engineering News, March 24, 2010.
